Shared Ministry Update

Our Relationship with Christ United Methodist Church: Update

We continue to have conversation with the leadership of Christ United Methodist Church about deepening our relationship with one another beyond sharing the facilities.

On Thursday, April 11, our Moderator (Dick Kloppel) and Vice-Moderator (Karen Spencer) and Rev. Lynne met with the key lay leaders (Lois Baker, Rosemary Neilsen and Rebecca Marinko) and Rev. Dawn of Christ UMC. The Rev. Dr. Tony Clark, Montana-Northern Wyoming UCC Conference Transitional Conference Minister and The Rev. Karen McRae, District Superintendent, Mountain Sky Conference UMC also participated in the meeting.

From that meeting we have new information and some steps to go forward.

New Information:

  • If the two congregations were to merge and become a federated congregation (one congregation with membership in two denominations) it would not be possible to have two pastors serving at the same time. This is due to an across-the-board clergy shortage and the United Methodists do not have the luxury of having multiple pastors serving a church this size.
  • We are still exploring options for the future “ownership” of the United Methodist portion of the building.

Next Steps:

  • Continue to pray for insight, wisdom and discernment.
  • Hold a second UCC Congregational information session and conversation on May 19 to have follow up conversations from the SWOT conversation we held in February and the possibilities that have come to light since then.
  • Getting to Know You….First Congregational UCC and Christ UMC Speed-dating Potluck!  Sunday June 9 following worshipAs we continue our conversation about our ongoing and future relationship with Christ United Methodist Church, we want to use the summer to get to know one another more as people! What better way to get that started than with a good old church pot-luck. On Sunday, June 9th, we’ll gather after worship for some pot-luck fellowship and speed-dating. Yep. We’ll have some guided time of brief conversations and then shift conversation companions so we’ll have a chance to get to know more people. The conversation should be lively and informative.
  • Continue holding joint worship services after Labor Day – leadership of those services yet to be determined.
  • Invite Christ United Methodist to be involved in the Rally Day festivities, including future planning meetings.
  • Get updates from Christ UMC about what’s going on in their congregation regarding a deeper relationship with us.
  • Hold another leadership meeting to include Conference Minister and District Superintendent to continue leadership discussion and processing.
